The Boston Red Sox saw their 15 game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday. The streak matched the longest in the franchise’s 126 year history.
The Red Sox tied the record set by the 1946 team with a 6-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park. That 1946 club, which included Ted Williams, also won 15 straight games.
In the nightcap, the Orioles defeated the Red Sox 5-1. Kyle Bradish pitched six innings and allowed one run for Baltimore. The Orioles scored four runs in the first inning and held on for the win.
The Red Sox had not lost a game since July 1. Their streak included a stretch of 20 wins in 22 games. Jarren Duran and Caleb Durbin contributed key hits during the run that tied the franchise mark.
The doubleheader was a makeup from a rainout on Tuesday. The Red Sox and Orioles had played earlier in the series as well.
Boston’s record now stands at 52-49. The Orioles improved with the victory that ended the streak. The teams continue their schedules in the American League East.
