The Boston Red Sox optioned infielder Romy Gonzalez to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. The move cleared roster space for new players added after the trade deadline.
Gonzalez returned to the major league roster on June 28 after missing the first half of the 2026 season. He underwent left shoulder surgery in March following an injury that began late in the 2025 season. He made his season debut as the designated hitter against the New York Yankees.
In 19 games since his activation, Gonzalez batted .185 with one home run and a .572 OPS. He primarily played second base and served as a designated hitter. The Red Sox had used him as a versatile utility player in previous seasons. Last year he hit .305 with an .826 OPS in 96 games while seeing time at first base and second base.
Interim manager Chad Tracy said Gonzalez was not pleased with the decision but handled it professionally. Tracy noted that Gonzalez remains a part of the organization and can still contribute in the future.
The Red Sox activated left handed pitcher Erik Miller, catcher Jake Rogers, and outfielder Eli White as part of the roster changes. They also designated right hander Ryan Watson for assignment.
Gonzalez has shown the ability to hit left handed pitching effectively in prior seasons. The Red Sox infield has dealt with multiple injuries this year, which led to his early return from rehabilitation. His demotion allows him additional time to work on his swing at the Triple-A level with the Worcester Red Sox.
The 29 year old has options remaining and can return to the major league club later in the season if needed. The Red Sox continue to manage their roster after recent acquisitions and ongoing injury situations.
