Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman left Wednesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals after falling into the visitors dugout. The scary incident took place in the top of the eighth inning at Dodger Stadium during a 4-2 Dodgers win that completed a three game sweep.
Royals outfielder Isaac Collins hit a high foul popup off a pitch from reliever Landon Knack. Freeman tracked the ball into foul territory near the first base side. As the ball continued to drift, Freeman moved toward the dugout steps in an attempt to make the catch. His left foot slipped on one of the steps, and he fell face first down several stairs into the Royals dugout.

After the game, Freeman spoke with reporters. He said he did not hit his head during the fall. He reported soreness in his kneecaps, shoulder, hand, and wrist. Manager Dave Roberts said the team’s head athletic trainer reported total body soreness. Roberts described the situation as day to day and noted that Freeman was already scheduled to have Friday off. No X-rays were taken. Roberts stated the team felt it had avoided a more serious outcome and that Freeman was in good spirits.
Freeman had gone 1 for 2 with a walk in the game before the incident. The Dodgers secured the victory and the series sweep. Further evaluation of Freeman’s condition is expected in the coming days as the team continues its schedule.
