The Pittsburgh Pirates have released designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, according to multiple sources.
Ozuna signed a one year contract worth $12 million with the Pirates in February 2026. The deal included a mutual option for 2027. He joined the team after six seasons with the Atlanta Braves.
In 70 games with Pittsburgh this season, Ozuna batted .203 with a .286 on base percentage and .327 slugging percentage. He recorded eight home runs and 29 RBIs. His OPS stood at .613. Among National League players with at least 250 plate appearances, his batting average ranked near the bottom of the league.
The Pirates will call up Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Ozuna’s spot on the 26 man roster. The move also clears a place on the 40 man roster.
Ozuna began the year as the primary designated hitter. He posted a .181 average in April. His production improved slightly in May and June but declined again in July. He struck out in 28.6 percent of his plate appearances.
The Pirates entered the season looking to improve their offense after finishing with the fewest home runs in the majors the previous year. They signed Ozuna along with other additions such as Brandon Lowe and Ryan O’Hearn. The team has remained in contention for a National League wild card spot and made moves as buyers before the trade deadline.
Ozuna, 35, previously played for the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. He was a three time All-Star and two time Silver Slugger winner earlier in his career. He hit 21 home runs with the Braves in 2025.The release ends Ozuna’s time with the Pirates after less than a full season.
