The Chicago Blackhawks selected two Canadian prospects in back to back picks during the second round of the 2026 NHL Draft on Saturday.
With the 34th overall selection, the team chose defenseman Xavier Villeneuve from the Blainville Boisbriand Armada in the QMJHL. Villeneuve, born in 2007, is committed to Boston University and has shown strong skating and offensive play in junior hockey despite his smaller frame.
The Blackhawks then traded up to take forward Ryan Roobroeck at No. 35 overall. Roobroeck plays for the Niagara IceDogs in the OHL. At 6 foot 4, he adds size and skill up front, with experience in international play including the CHL NTDP Prospects Challenge.
These additions fit into the Blackhawks ongoing effort to build depth through the draft with young North American talent from major junior leagues. Villeneuve brings defensive upside and puck moving ability, while Roobroeck provides a bigger body with forward potential. Both players are expected to continue developing in their current leagues or at college before making the jump to the NHL.
