The NCAA has suspended Tennessee Volunteers linebacker Arion Carter for two games. The penalty stems from an improper benefit related to a flight paid for by his agent.
Carter’s agent covered a $427 flight to an NFL pre draft training facility. Carter later repaid the cost in full. He had declared for the 2026 NFL Draft in December 2025, hired an agent, and then withdrew from the draft process in January due to a foot injury. He returned to the University of Tennessee.
The suspension covers the Volunteers first two games of the 2026 season. Those games are against Furman on Sept. 5 and Georgia Tech on Sept. 12. Carter will be eligible to return after those contests.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel issued a statement in support of the player. Heupel described Carter as representing the positive aspects of college athletics and noted his dedication over four years at the university. Heupel highlighted Carter’s character, loyalty, and leadership within the program.
Carter averaged 7.6 tackles per game last season, leading the SEC in that category. Over his career he has recorded 161 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, and nine pass deflections in 31 games.
The NCAA classified the matter as a Level III violation. Carter fired the agent after returning to school. He has continued his studies and earned Dean’s List honors while majoring in public health.
Tennessee has depth at the linebacker position heading into the season. The suspension does not affect conference play later in the schedule.
