The Pittsburgh Steelers placed cornerback Jalen Ramsey on the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday. Ramsey will miss the start of training camp because of a knee injury.
General manager Omar Khan said the injury occurred during mandatory minicamp. It does not require surgery. Khan expects Ramsey to miss a couple of weeks and to be ready for the start of the regular season.
Ramsey is a two time Pro Bowl selection. The Steelers acquired him in a trade last season. He has started at cornerback for the team and has experience playing in multiple defensive roles.
Second year cornerback Donte Kent also starts training camp on the PUP list with a knee issue. Offensive tackle Broderick Jones is fully cleared and will participate in early practices.
Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy said the team will be careful with Ramsey’s recovery. Ramsey can move around the defense in different positions, which requires the staff to manage his workload carefully.
The PUP list allows a player to miss the first part of training camp while recovering. Players can be activated once they are ready to practice fully. Ramsey’s placement means he will not take part in the initial on field sessions at camp.
