New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said Thursday that wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is no longer with the team.
Hopkins, a 13 year NFL veteran, had spent the past week with the Patriots during training camp. He worked in an advisory role with the coaching staff and receivers. Vrabel previously explained that Hopkins was not trying out as a player. Instead, the 34 year old was exploring coaching or player personnel opportunities after his playing career.
Vrabel addressed the matter at his morning news conference. “Well, it was a great experience. Hop’s not here. But, it was a great experience for I think all of us,” Vrabel said. He noted that situations like this allow a player or former player who loves football to come in, help and learn.
Hopkins joined the Patriots earlier this week. He assisted the offensive coaches and met with the personnel department. The arrangement was temporary as Hopkins considered his next steps.
Hopkins has played 13 seasons in the NFL. He is a five time Pro Bowl selection and three time first team All-Pro. He previously played for the Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Baltimore Ravens. He spent one season under Vrabel with the Titans in 2023.
The Patriots are in the early stages of training camp. Vrabel continues to oversee practices and evaluate the roster. Hopkins time with the team has ended after the short advisory stint.
Hopkins remains a free agent. No further details were provided on his immediate plans.
