Aldon Smith, a former standout defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers, died Saturday at age 36.
Smith was found unresponsive and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The 49ers issued a statement expressing devastation over the sudden loss. They noted his undeniable talent during his time with the team.'
Smith, born in Kansas City, Missouri, was selected seventh overall by the 49ers in the 2011 NFL Draft. He quickly became one of the league’s top pass rushers, recording 14 sacks as a rookie and setting a franchise single season record with 19.5 sacks in his second year. He earned All Pro and Pro Bowl honors early in his career.
His time in the league was also marked by off field issues that led to suspensions and arrests. Smith played for the Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and Seattle Seahawks after leaving the 49ers. In recent years, he worked on personal development and mentored younger players, including speaking to 49ers rookies last week.
