Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield spoke about his contract situation on Thursday at training camp. He said he does not have a new deal and feels disrespected by the offers he received.
Mayfield is entering the final year of his current contract. He is set to become a free agent in March 2027 if no extension is reached. Talks between Mayfield and the team ended without an agreement before camp began.
“To feel disrespected a little bit, and that’s really the disappointing part,” Mayfield said. He also described the situation as very disappointing and said he feels undervalued. Mayfield noted that he believed he had earned a long term extension based on his performance.
According to reports, the Buccaneers offered a two year deal that averaged less than $50 million per year. Mayfield said he has been told he is a franchise quarterback. He called the negotiations disappointing and said the team has historically approached deals in this manner. He added that being treated that way while viewed as a cornerstone of the franchise is hard to accept.
Mayfield confirmed he still wants to remain with the Buccaneers long term. He said he addressed the team to keep the focus on the upcoming season. He stated he is in the best shape of his career and is ready to play football without further contract discussions during camp.
The Buccaneers and Mayfield had discussed an extension throughout the offseason. Progress was limited, and both sides moved on once training camp opened. Mayfield will play the 2026 season under his existing deal.
Teammate Vita Vea is also without a new contract, adding to the current roster situation in Tampa. Mayfield emphasized that his attention is now fully on preparation and the games ahead.
