Anthony Taylor, the English football referee, has announced his retirement from professional officiating with immediate effect. The 47 year old from Wythenshawe, Manchester, made the decision after a career that spanned more than two decades.
Taylor officiated 831 matches in total. This included 432 games in the Premier League. He took charge of every major domestic cup final in England during his time at the top level. His final match was the 2026 FIFA World Cup last-16 clash between Portugal and Spain on July 6.
In a statement, Taylor said officiating at the elite level had been an immense privilege. He noted the intense pressure and constant scrutiny of the role. He added that the time was right to step aside and move to the next chapter of his career.
The Football Association Refereeing department issued a message of congratulations. Officials praised Taylor for his distinguished service both at home and on the international stage. He had been on the FIFA list since 2013 and officiated at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, as well as multiple European competitions.
Taylor began his refereeing journey in the lower leagues before progressing to the Football League in 2006 and the Premier League in 2010. He also handled high profile international fixtures, including the 2021 UEFA Nations League final and the 2023 Europa League final.
The retirement comes shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. Taylor had officiated three matches at the tournament in North America. Colleagues and the wider football community have acknowledged his long service to the game.
