The Seattle Storm apologized Wednesday for an exchange involving one of their co-owners and two fans during the team’s home game against the Indiana Fever
The incident occurred Tuesday night at Climate Pledge Arena. The Fever defeated the Storm 105-95. Two teenage fans sat courtside holding a sign that read “Thank you Sophie for speaking up for girls.” The fans also wore shirts from XX-XY Athletics. Their support related to recent comments by Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham has stated support for barring transgender girls and women from girls and women’s sports.
Storm minority co-owner Celeste Keaton approached the fans. Reports state she directed expletives at them and called them “f---ing insane.”
Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder released a statement on Wednesday. “We are aware one of our co-owners made comments to two fans in attendance at last night’s game. We apologize that this happened,” Gilder said. “Everyone who attends a Storm game deserves to feel welcome, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect.”
The WNBA later suspended Keaton from attending the Storm’s next five home games. The league also fined the organization an undisclosed amount.
Cunningham responded on social media. She called the co-owner’s actions “truly embarrassing” and said it “shows the type of leader she is.” Cunningham also praised the two fans for standing up for their beliefs.
The exchange took place amid broader discussion of Cunningham’s position on eligibility rules in women’s sports. A small group of supporters had gathered outside the arena before the game in connection with a related ballot initiative in Washington state.
