Oleksandra Oliynykova, the No. 1 seed from Ukraine, reached the quarterfinals of the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open on Thursday. She defeated Leyre Romero Gormaz of Spain 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-2 in the round of 16 on clay courts.

The match lasted over two hours. Oliynykova won the first set in a tiebreak after both players held serve for much of the set. Romero Gormaz, a Spanish left hander, took the second set by breaking Oliynykova's serve twice. The Ukrainian player responded in the third set by controlling play from the baseline and breaking Romero Gormaz at key moments.

Oliynykova has performed well on clay this season. She entered the tournament with a strong ranking and recent results that placed her as the top seed. Romero Gormaz came into the match after advancing through earlier rounds. The two players had not faced each other before this encounter.

The Hamburg event is part of the WTA 250 calendar. Oliynykova will face the winner of another round of 16 match in the quarterfinals. The tournament takes place at the Rothenbaum Tennis Club in Germany.

Oliynykova has shown steady improvement in recent months. Her run in Hamburg continues her progress on the European clay swing. Romero Gormaz competed hard throughout the three sets but could not maintain consistency against the top seed's baseline game.

The match featured several long rallies typical of clay court tennis. Oliynykova converted break point opportunities effectively in the deciding set. The victory moves her closer to her season goals on the WTA Tour.

Oliynykova's next opponent in the quarterfinals will be determined later Thursday or Friday. The draw includes several players with strong records on clay surfaces.
