The Edmonton Oilers have named Mike Babcock as their new head coach.
Babcock returns to the NHL after several years away from the bench. He previously coached the Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, and Toronto Maple Leafs, where he won a Stanley Cup in 2008.
The Oilers made the move after parting ways with Kris Knoblauch following a first round playoff exit. They also added D.J. Smith as associate coach. Smith had worked with Babcock before during his time in Toronto.
The NHL reviewed Babcock’s past and cleared him to coach again before the hiring was finalized. Babcock is known for his experience with top teams and players. The Oilers are looking to build on recent success with stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl still on the roster. A press conference is expected soon to introduce the new coach.
