The NBA will not schedule any preseason games in the Middle East this year. Sources told Trending USA that this marks the first time in 5 years the league will skip the region for preseason play.
The NBA has held preseason games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, each fall since 2022. Past events featured teams including the Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers.
League sources said the decision stems from the ongoing war between the United States and Iran along with the wider regional conflict. The conflict began in late February 2026.
The NBA held discussions with several teams about potential participation this year. Those clubs included the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards. No games were formally announced for Abu Dhabi in 2026.
A potential debut event in Qatar was also under consideration at one point but will not take place.
The league maintains a multiyear partnership with the United Arab Emirates. Officials indicated the NBA plans to resume preseason games in Abu Dhabi when conditions allow and it is safe to do so.
Preseason games in the region have served as part of the NBA’s international schedule. They typically occur in early October before the regular season begins.
The absence of Middle East games this fall changes the preseason calendar for the involved teams. Those clubs will now focus on domestic or other international exhibition options if any are arranged.
