Former Boston Celtics guard Josh Richardson has announced his retirement from the NBA. The 32 year old shared the news on social media this week after a 10 year professional career.
Richardson was selected by the Miami Heat in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft out of the University of Tennessee. He played 554 regular season games across six teams. Those teams included the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, and New Orleans Pelicans.
Over his career, Richardson averaged 11.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He earned more than $62 million in salary during his time in the league. He appeared in 44 games for the Celtics during his stint in Boston.
In his retirement announcement, Richardson reflected on his path from high school basketball through college and into the NBA. He stated that he gave his best effort every day and left the game with no regrets. He thanked fans, coaches, teammates, and his family for their support throughout his career.
Richardson spent significant time with the Heat, where he developed as a two way guard known for defense and perimeter shooting. He later moved to other organizations as a reliable rotation player. His time with the Celtics added to his experience in different systems and playoff environments.
Tributes came from former teammates and associates. Dwyane Wade and Bam Adebayo were among those who publicly acknowledged his contributions and work ethic. Fans from Tennessee and the various NBA cities where he played also shared messages of appreciation.
Richardson briefly played overseas with Basket Zaragoza in Spain earlier in 2026 after becoming a free agent. He then decided to step away from professional basketball. At 32, he closes a career that began as a second round selection and stretched across a full decade in the league.
