Caitlin Clark and Saniya Rivers received technical fouls during the Indiana Fever’s 123-88 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Clark directed a comment at Rivers to check the scoreboard while the two players exchanged words on the court. Officials issued technical fouls to both players for the exchange.
Clark finished with 27 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field, including 5 of 9 from three point range, and 6 of 6 from the free throw line. She added 11 assists and two rebounds in 27 minutes. The performance marked a double-double for the Fever guard.
Rivers recorded six assists for the Sun in 24 minutes. The Connecticut guard has been a primary defender against Clark in previous matchups between the teams.
The Fever scored 70 points in the first half and set a franchise record for points in a game with 123. Aliyah Boston contributed 22 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points.
The Sun scored 88 points. The team entered the game with a 7-19 record while the Fever improved to 17-10.
Clark entered the contest with six technical fouls this season. The technical against Rivers brought her total to seven. Under league rules, an eighth technical foul results in an automatic one game suspension.
After the game, Clark said Rivers told her she was locking her up. Clark responded by telling her to look at the scoreboard. She said the official did not like the comment.
The game was the final contest for both teams before the WNBA All-Star break. The Fever won their third consecutive game. The Sun dropped to 7-20 overall and 3-10 on the road.
Clark and Rivers have competed against each other in multiple games this season. Rivers has been assigned to defend Clark in several of those matchups. The technical fouls occurred during a period of physical play between the two sides.
