Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles scored a career high 28 points and set a WNBA rookie record with eight three-pointers in an 87-84 win over the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday at Target Center.
Miles went 8-for-11 from beyond the arc. Coming into the game, she'd made just two threes all season. The Lynx needed every one of them, too. Golden State's Cecilia Zandalasini hit a three to put the Valkyries up 75-70 with about seven minutes left. Then Minnesota went on an 11-0 run, with Courtney Williams scoring six points and Miles hitting another three during the stretch.
Williams finished with 17 points, nine of them in the fourth quarter. The Lynx improved to 8-2 on the season and started 2-0 in the Commissioner's Cup.
Miles was named WNBA Rookie of the Month on Wednesday for her play in May. Through 10 games, she's averaging 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds. She was the No. 2 overall pick out of TCU and has fit into Cheryl Reeve's system right away.
"It means I'm doing something right, but more importantly, it means that we're winning," Miles said of the individual recognition. "That's what I'm most proud of."
Minnesota hosts Seattle on Saturday.
