2-Foot Cottonmouth Snake Found in Arkansas High School Football Player Helmet

A high school football player at Maumelle High School in Arkansas practiced for nearly an hour on August 6 with a two-foot cottonmouth snake inside his helmet. The student athlete put on the headgear for regular practice drills after warmups. He later felt unusual movement inside the padding and took the helmet to an assistant coach for a closer look.

The coaches examined the equipment and found the snake tucked behind the padding. Staff placed the helmet in a tote bag and contacted Maumelle Animal Services. Officers arrived and initially received reports that the snake was a copperhead. Further inspection showed it was a cottonmouth, a venomous pit viper common in the region.

The snake stayed tightly lodged under the padding and did not come out on its own. Officers poured water into the helmet to encourage it to leave, then used tools to remove it and place it in a bag. Animal Services Director Chris Davis said the snake appeared large and full, suggesting it had eaten recently and sought a dark enclosed space to rest. The helmet had been left on the ground, providing that opportunity.

Davis confirmed the player had worn the helmet with the snake inside for about an hour without being bitten. Maumelle High School Athletic Director Kirk Horton described the discovery as a moment of shock and disbelief for the staff. He noted that in his ten years in the role he had never encountered anything similar.

Animal services technicians transported the cottonmouth to a wooded area away from the school grounds and released it there. The player received a different helmet and returned to practice the same day. School staff reminded the team to check equipment carefully before use, as snakes and other animals can enter dark spaces such as helmets left outdoors.

The incident involved the unnamed student athlete, the coaching staff, local animal services officers, and the specific two-foot cottonmouth that had entered the helmet. All parties confirmed the player remained unharmed throughout the practice and removal process.
