Tyra Caterina Grant, an 18 year old Italian player, beat Katie Boulter 6-4, 6-2 in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday. It was Grant's debut in a Grand Slam main draw.
Grant came through qualifying to reach the main event. She broke Boulter early in both sets and held firm from the baseline. Her backhand produced several winners, and she served seven aces in the match that lasted under 70 minutes.
Boulter, the British number two and home favorite, struggled with double faults at key moments. Grant faced little pressure on her own serve and converted the opportunities she created.
Grant, who had never played a competitive grass match before this year's qualifying, now moves on to the second round. She will face the winner of Marie Bouzkova against Talia Gibson.
The win marks a strong start for the young player, ranked around 170, in her first appearance at the All England Club.
