Naomi Osaka won against Daria Kasatkina today at Wimbledon. She took the match in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3. The whole thing finished in 65 minutes on Court 1.
Osaka got off to a fast start in the first set. She only lost five points on her serve and made just six unforced errors. She broke Kasatkina’s serve a few times and closed it out without much trouble. Kasatkina had a hard time settling in on the grass court.
The second set was a bit closer at first. Osaka went up 3-1, but Kasatkina started hitting better and pushed some longer rallies. She even broke back to tie it at 3-3 after a good forehand lob. Osaka then won a long game that went to three deuces and broke again to lead 4-3. From there she took the last three games to finish 6-3. In the full match Osaka hit 11 winners to Kasatkina’s six.
This is the first time Osaka has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. She is 28 years old and a four time major winner. She has now made the round of 16 at every Grand Slam at least once. She also reached that stage at the French Open a few weeks ago, so this is her second straight major where she has gotten that far.
After the match Osaka said she felt good on the grass because she had played several matches on it in the last couple of weeks. She talked about her daughter Shai, who turned three today. Osaka mentioned that her daughter had needed a timeout the day before when they tried to go to the park, but she hoped today would go better after blowing out the candles on her cake.
Osaka came out in a noticeable outfit with an embroidered cloak and a white trail. It was also her first win on Court 1 at Wimbledon. She has played well here so far and has not dropped a set in her three matches.
Kasatkina tried to fight back in the second set but could not keep up with Osaka’s serving and power on the day. This was the fourth time the two have played, and Osaka has now won all of them.
In the fourth round Osaka will play the winner of Aryna Sabalenka against Jelena Ostapenko. That match was set for later today. If she wins that one she would reach the quarterfinals for the first time at Wimbledon.
Osaka's win keeps her in the tournament and gives her a chance to go deeper than she has before on this surface. She will need to stay sharp against whoever comes out of the other match.
