Robin Montgomery won her first WTA title Sunday at the Libema Open after Barbora Krejcikova withdrew from the final due to illness.
The 21 year old American reached the final by winning four matches in the main draw. She defeated higher ranked players on the way, including a semifinal win over Ajla Tomljanovic. Krejcíkova's withdrawal handed Montgomery the trophy without a final match.
Montgomery started the week ranked No. 484. She had missed much of the previous season with a wrist injury and has been working her way back. The victory marks a big step in her comeback and makes her one of the lowest ranked players to win a WTA title in recent years.
The grass court tournament in the Netherlands serves as important preparation ahead of Wimbledon. Montgomery’s run showed strong serving and baseline play throughout the event.
