Two of the more unlikely quarterfinalists at this year's French Open face off Wednesday on Court Philippe-Chatrier, with 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya taking on qualifier Maja Chwalinska in a match with no shortage of storylines.
Kalinskaya got here the hard way. She came back from two points down to beat Anastasia Potapova in three sets on Monday, surviving a two-hour, 49-minute battle to reach the Roland Garros quarterfinals for the first time in her career. It was not her first test of nerve on clay this spring. Earlier in Rome, she saved nine match points in a second-round win over Katerina Siniakova, the most any player has saved on the way to a tour-level victory in 2026. She sits 24th in the world heading into Wednesday's match.
Chwalinska's run has been the bigger story of the tournament. The 24-year-old Polish qualifier entered Roland Garros ranked 114th in the world and was making her main-draw debut at the event. She has since beaten Zheng Qinwen, Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari, and Diane Parry, dropping just one set across the entire tournament. With Iga Swiatek's fourth-round exit, Chwalinska became the last Polish player standing in the draw. She will move into the top 100 in the world rankings next week regardless of Wednesday's result.
The two have never met before. Kalinskaya brings the experience of a second Grand Slam quarterfinal and an aggressive baseline game well-suited to clay. Chwalinska brings a week of momentum, a lefty serve that produces tricky angles, and the freedom of having nothing to lose as the heavy underdog.
The winner advances to a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time in her career.
