Ignacio Buse defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(4), 6-3 in the first round of the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships on Tuesday.
The Peruvian fifth seed broke through in a tight opening set tiebreak and then pulled away in the second set. Buse converted key opportunities on grass and held off the former champion throughout the match, which lasted just under two hours.
Tsitsipas, the 2022 winner at this event, struggled to find rhythm against the younger player. Buse improved his record on grass with the straight sets victory and moved into the round of 16.
The win gives Buse valuable ranking points as he prepares for the grass court swing leading into Wimbledon. Tsitsipas will look to regroup ahead of his next tournament.
