Alexandra Eala made her first appearance at the Berlin Tennis Open on Wednesday when she faced Donna Vekic in the opening round.
The WTA 500 grass court event, which began on June 15 at the Rot Weiss Tennis Club, gave the Filipino player a wildcard entry. Eala had won a title at the Birmingham Open earlier in the grass season and reached the second round at Queen’s.

Vekic, the Queen’s champion, entered the match with strong recent form on the surface. The two players had met once before, with Eala winning on hard courts in January.
The Berlin Open serves as a key stop for players preparing for Wimbledon. Several top names are in the field, including Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina.
Eala’s result in Berlin will help shape her preparations ahead of her second Wimbledon appearance.
