USA Defeats Bosnia and Herzegovina in World Cup Round of 32

The United States Men's National Team advanced to the Round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match took place at a stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the USMNT playing as co hosts.

Folarin Balogun scored the opening goal in the 45th minute. He finished from close range after a scramble in the box to give the United States a 1-0 halftime lead. Balogun later received a red card just past the hour mark following a VAR review for a foul. The United States played the rest of the game with 10 men.

Malik Tillman added the second goal in the 82nd minute with a free kick. His strike extended the lead to 2-0 and helped secure the result. Matt Freese, the US goalkeeper, faced limited threats and kept a clean sheet as the defense held firm despite the numerical disadvantage.

The United States controlled much of the first half and created several chances. Bosnia and Herzegovina struggled to generate consistent attacks and managed few shots on target. In the second half, the USMNT shifted to a more defensive setup after the red card. They absorbed pressure and relied on counter opportunities and set pieces.

Balogun's goal and early involvement stood out before his sending off. Tillman's free kick showed good technique and composure under pressure. The midfield, including players like Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, helped maintain structure. The win marked a solid team effort in a knockout stage game.

The United States finished the group stage with a win over Australia, a win over Paraguay, and a loss to Turkiye. This result sends them into the Round of 16 against Belgium. Bosnia and Herzegovina exit the tournament after the round of 32.

The match had 25 total shots, with the United States recording 18 and Bosnia and Herzegovina seven. Possession was roughly even, but the USMNT was more clinical in front of goal. The attendance was around 60,000 at the venue.

This victory advances the USMNT in the tournament hosted in part by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It continues a run of solid performances in the competition.
