South Korea defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday.
The Czech Republic took the lead in the 59th minute when Ladislav Krejčí scored. South Korea responded in the second half, with Hwang In Beom equalizing in the 67th minute. Substitute Oh Hyeon Gyu then scored the winner in the 80th minute to give his team the victory.
South Korea, competing in Group A, earned their first three points of the tournament with the comeback win. The Czech Republic, returning to the World Cup for the first time in two decades, left empty handed after the loss.
The match was played at a stadium in Guadalajara as part of the opening round of games. South Korea captain Son Heung min and his teammates will look to build on the result in their next group match.
