Mexico put together their best performance of the pre-World Cup stretch on Wednesday night, blowing out Serbia 5-1 at the Estadio Nemesio Diez in Toluca.
Serbia actually took the lead first. Petar Stanic scored in the 19th minute after a ball bounced around in front of the net and fell right to him. But Mexico answered fast. Johan Vasquez headed in a corner kick from Brian Gutierrez to tie it up, and then Serbia basically gave them the lead when Stefan Bukinac's back pass missed the goalkeeper entirely and rolled into the net just before halftime.
The second half was all Mexico. Raul Jimenez finished off a clean look to make it 3-1. Then came another Serbian own goal, this time from Adem Avdic. Luis Chavez capped things off with a long-range strike in the 90th minute to make it 5-1.
It was exactly the kind of result Javier Aguirre wanted heading into next week. Mexico opens their World Cup on June 11 against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca. They'll also face South Korea and Czechia in Group A. Serbia, who didn't qualify for this summer's tournament, played a young squad and it showed.
