FIFA Bans Reusable Water Bottles at World Cup Stadiums

FIFA has updated its rules for the 2026 World Cup and now prohibits fans from bringing reusable water bottles into any stadium. The change, made in the past few days, reverses earlier guidelines that allowed empty, clear plastic bottles up to one liter.

The reason given is security. Officials say the ban reduces the risk of bottles being thrown and causing injuries. As a result, fans will not be able to carry empty bottles inside for refills at water fountains.

The decision comes as temperatures at many host venues are expected to top 30°C during the tournament. Supporters will have to buy bottled water from concession stands once inside.

The Football Supporters’ Association called the timing unfortunate, noting that fan safety in the heat should be a top concern. Stadium water prices have not been announced yet.
