Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers took a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
The right hander retired the first 22 batters he faced. A fielding error by teammate Mookie Betts on a ground ball with two outs in the eighth ended the perfect game bid. Yamamoto stayed in the game and kept a no hitter going until Tristan Peters hit a leadoff home run in the ninth.
Yamamoto allowed one hit and one run over 8 1/3 innings. He struck out seven batters and threw 109 pitches. The Dodgers won the game 7-1.
Yamamoto left the mound to a standing ovation from the crowd. The outing was his fourth straight win and longest start of the season. It lowered his ERA to 2.68 for the year.
