Rookie catcher Brandon Valenzuela delivered a walk off RBI single in the ninth inning Tuesday night to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Rogers Centre.
Valenzuela lined the ball into left field to score Daulton Varsho and end the game. It was the first walk off hit of his major league career.
The 25 year old switch hitter from Hermosillo, Mexico, has played a key role for the Blue Jays since his debut in April. Acquired from the San Diego Padres last summer, he has hit seven home runs this season and stayed hot at the plate.
With regular catcher Alejandro Kirk expected back from injury as soon as this weekend, Valenzuela’s recent play has sparked talk about how the team will handle its catching situation moving forward.
