Detroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, the team said Friday.
Sweeney had been sidelined with shoulder discomfort for several weeks. The Tigers shut down his rehab program after the issue did not improve, and surgery became the only option.
Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed the decision. “After trying conservatively to get through this shoulder issue, surgery ended up being the only option,” he said.
Sweeney, 26, joined the Tigers in the 2024 trade that sent pitcher Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made his major-league debut that summer and has played both shortstop and third base for Detroit.
The move leaves the Tigers without Sweeney for the rest of the 2026 season as they continue their campaign in the American League Central.
