The University of Georgia baseball team started its College World Series run with a 7-1 win over Texas on Saturday night at Charles Schwab Field.
Pitcher Joey Volchko threw a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out a career high 15 batters. Georgia scored four runs in the first inning, helped by Texas errors, and added three more later. Rylan Lujo contributed key hits, including a two run homer.
The Bulldogs, the No. 3 national seed with a 52-12 record, advanced in the winners bracket. They face Oklahoma on Monday night. A win there would put Georgia one victory from the championship series.
This is Georgia’s first College World Series appearance since 2008. The team has relied on strong pitching and timely offense to reach this stage.
